6.5-million sq. ft. research university King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is established to drive innovation in science and technology and to support world-class research in areas such as energy and the environment.
In line with the university's green research focus, the campus is designed with highly visible sustainable technologies. A coral-reef ecosystem is preserved as a marine sanctuary and research area. Two huge interconnected facilities are built in the capacity of what should normally be seen in two-dozen individual buildings and share a single roof covered by energy-conserving photovoltaics for energy conservation and comfortable walks. Grey water is used for toilet flushing and irrigation, whereas a rainwater retention system serves the campus hardscape.
