The Delhi International Airport has won British Construction Industry (BCI) award for 2010.
 
Already a recipient of high praise from different quarters for its scale, state of the art features and for the speed, in which it was built, the British Construction award, is further affirmation that the Delhi Airport can join the ranks of the finest airports in the world, claimed an official spokesperson on Thursday.
 
Participation in the award contest is restricted to UK-based construction companies.
 
In the case of the Delhi Airport, the entry was submitted by the principal architect, Mott MacDonald, UK. The construction of the airport – regarded as an icon of infrastructure – represented the successful outcome of a team effort involving GMR – the commissioning authority, Mott MacDonald and HOK, the principal architects and Larsen & Toubro – the principal contractor.
  
As part of the citation, the jury remarked: "The delivery of the New Delhi Airport is a project of unprecedented scale in India. The new 4.4 km runway and 35 million passenger capacity terminal were completed on time in 38 months."
 
K. V. Rangaswami, Member of the Board and President (Construction), L&T said, "I am delighted that Delhi International Airport which was recently completed by L&T in record time and readied for the Common Wealth Games 2010 has been selected for the for this prestigious BCI Award in the International Category."
 
"In terms of speed, scale and sophistication, Delhi International Airport is the largest infrastructure project ever executed by L&T and the entire nation is proud of this achievement and proud of this Award," he added.
